Fostering a Flourishing Workplace (#120)

Melissa Barker 1
  1. Starlight Children's Foundation, Richmond, VIC, Australia

The Starlight Children’s Foundation understands the value of a highly engaged team. Engaged employees are proud advocates, inspired and motivated to do their best, more innovative and productive, customer focused, healthier, more likely to stay, and they achieve great results. Starlight’s research has shown that wellbeing is the most strongly correlated driver of engagement, which is essential for high performance. In fostering high levels of wellbeing, engagement and performance, Starlight has underpinned the employment experience with the science and practical application of positive psychology. We support all team members in flourishing at home, work and in their communities, and in creating positive impacts for seriously ill kids and their families. All team members are set up for success, pursue meaningful work, play to and develop their strengths, celebrate their achievements, and their manager is alongside them as their coach. All team members are educated on the principles of positive psychology, and all leaders are trained in positive leadership and evidenced-based coaching approaches. Our positive psychology-based focus on wellbeing has significantly contributed to Starlight being recognised in 2020 as a Great Place to Work and Australia’s Most Innovative Company in the government, education and NFP sector by the Australian Financial Review.

This presentation will share how Starlight has underpinned the employment experience with the principles of positive psychology to support team members in being at their best, how they measure the impact of their holistic approach to wellbeing, and what the impact has been on an organisation dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill children’ and their families.
