Background
Chang et al. (2016) called for the continued development of positive psychologies that describe the unique and common aspects of diverse groups. The emerging research on the wellbeing and life satisfaction of Latinxs has centered on the role that few variables and their individual contribution have on the construct, such as gender (Arellano-Morales et al., 2016), age (Beyene et al., 2002), spirituality (Chatters et al., 2014), mindfulness (Ryan et. al, 2018), and social support (Angel et. al., 1992).
Hypotheses/Research Questions
We sought to assess the mediating role of mindfulness, social support, and spirituality in the prediction of wellbeing and life satisfaction based on age and gender of a Latinx community sample.
Sample Characteristics and Sample Size
Participants in this study were 393 Latinx individuals recruited in the United States through Qualtrics Panels. Participants were 70% female. The average age was 36.66 (SD = 14.27)
Design
Measures: Ryff Scales of Psychological Wellbeing (Ryff & Keyes, 1995), Interpersonal Support Evaluation List - Short Form (Payne et al., 2012), Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (Underwood & Teresi, 2002), Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener et al., 1985), and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (Brown & Ryan, 2003). A proposed model was tested using path analyses.
Results
The theorized model fit the data well with minor modifications. Results suggested a mediating role for mindfulness, social support, and spirituality between age and wellbeing and life satisfaction. However, only spirituality had a mediating role between gender and life satisfaction.
Scientific Contribution
Our findings underscore the complexity of factors, and their interactions, that can contribute to wellbeing and life satisfaction of Latinxs as well as the need for the development of more complex models that could shed light on individual, familial, communal, and societal factors that affect psychological wellbeing and life satisfaction among diverse populations.
