Background

Recent research in the field of leadership and wellbeing have led to a renewed interest in exploring forms of leadership which contribute to a better world (Grenville, 2017).

Hypotheses/Research Questions

What are the findings of empirical research regarding the outcomes of passion in leadership for organizations?
What is the impact of passion in leadership on leaders themselves and their followers?

Sample Characteristics and Sample Size

Thematic analysis (TA) of 26 papers
Systematic review (SR) on 12 peer reviewed papers

Design

TA of the literature on Passionate leadership: 26 papers analyzed. Data sources from EBSCO, Scopus, Science Direct and Google Scholar (June 2018) performed. Coding performed.
Themes searched using iterative/intuitive stance generating candidate themes. Themes reviewed for coherence, sub themes generated, prevalence of themes analyzed and ranked. Themes defined and named using labels.

SR: 12 quantitative + qualitative peer reviewed papers selected. Search terms (passion AND leader OR leaders OR leadership). PRISMA followed. Inclusion criteria defined and checked for coherence. Quantitative and qualitative papers selected. Quality assessment using QATQS.

Results

TA: Conceptual definition of Passionate Leadership In Organization (PLIO) proposed:
A leadership style identified as a way of life focused on bettering the world, while being authentic to oneself. PLIO is characterized by a clear purpose in life, affected by the impact of both Harmonious and Obsessive Passions, with an influence on followers, to drive actions forward, persistently leading to success.

Key finding 1: A leader’s work passion had a significantly positive effect on an employee’s work passion
Key finding 2: follower–leader secure attachment (FLSA) had a stronger impact on followers’ harmonious passion when environmental uncertainty was high
Key finding 3: HWP was positively related to work performance.

Scientific Contribution

TA: A conceptual definition for Passionate Leadership is proposed.
SR: Summarized and synthesized empirical studies which explored Passion in Leadership, and varied organizational outcomes identified.
